Mike Capaccio

Mike Capaccio was named the athletic director for The Citadel on August 15, 2018 after serving as the interim. The college announced Capaccio's selection after an extensive search that included more than 100 qualified applicants from around the country.

Capaccio came to The Citadel after serving as the CEO of the Brunswick (N.C.) Community College Foundation. He spent the previous two years as the school’s director of development.

While at Brunswick, Capaccio oversaw the daily operations of the BCC Foundation and all fundraising events. He increased named endowments almost 400 percent from $700,000 to over $2.5 million while securing a $2 million gift, the largest ever given to the BCC Foundation.

After being appointed CEO at Brunswick in June 2010, Capaccio worked closely with the athletics department in his capacity as vice president, developed and implemented the BCC Alumni Program and was selected the 2010 Brunswick Community College Administrator of the Year.

Prior to joining the staff at Brunswick, Capaccio spent eight years in various capacities at UNC Wilmington, including three as the athletic director from Oct. 2004 through May 2007. He was also the director of athletic development at the school from 2002-06.

As director of athletics, Capaccio was a key figure in a fundraising effort that resulted in $1.3 million for the construction and renovation of a new baseball locker room, and he also secured a $500,000 gift to begin development of new locker rooms for the men’s and women’s golf teams.

During his stint as director of athletic development he oversaw all fundraising activities within the athletic department, upped the number of endowed scholarships from eight to 41 and substantially increased giving in all areas to unprecedented heights in the school’s athletic history.

Capaccio earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Mary in 1981 and received his master’s degree in education from Drake.
